The character arc of Tim Spector

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born in July 1958 in north London. Between then and now sit University College School, medical training at St Bartholomew's, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a move into genetic epidemiology in 1992, the TwinsUK registry from the same year, Identically Different in 2012, The Diet Myth in 2015, Zoe in 2017, an OBE in 2020 and Ferment in 2025. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Tap the line to pluck it. Hover or tap any mark for its card. Drawn from the public record of his life; the sources are at the foot of the page.

Who is Tim Spector?

He changed field at thirty four.

He went to University College School in London, trained in medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College and studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He worked as a consultant rheumatologist, which is a settled and respectable medical career, and in 1992 he left it for genetic epidemiology.

The instrument he built is the reason the rest of the line exists. Identical twins share their genes, so any difference between them is not genetic. Since 1992 his team has enrolled fifteen thousand sets of twins in the TwinsUK registry, which turns the old argument about nature and nurture into something a person can actually measure. He is professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London.

What the twins kept showing was that diet and the gut microbiome explain far more than the genes do, which is how a geneticist ended up writing about food. Identically Different came in 2012, The Diet Myth in 2015, Spoon Fed in 2020, Food For Life in 2022 and Ferment in 2025. In 2017 he co-founded Zoe, a company that sells personalised nutrition advice, and it should be said plainly that he has a commercial interest there. Zoe built the COVID Symptom Study app, for which he was appointed OBE in 2020, and he is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

The moments

Tim Spector's timeline.

The 1980s

Jun 1983

Medicine at Barts

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A medical training, and then a public health one on top of it.

Jun 1989

Consultant rheumatologist

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A settled consultancy, which is where most medical careers stop moving.

The 1990s

1 Jun 1991

Stay a consultant, or start again

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: move into epidemiology, taken, or stay in rheumatology. The registry grew to fifteen thousand sets of twins, and every book and company on the line came out of it.

Jun 1992

He changed field

Milestone, and it changed everything. Thirty four years old, and a whole different discipline.

~1993

Fifteen thousand twins

Milestone, and it changed everything. Identical twins share their genes, so any difference between them is not genetic. That is the whole instrument.

The 2010s

Mar 2012

Identically Different

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Twenty years of twins, written up for everybody else.

14 May 2015

The Diet Myth

Milestone, and it changed everything. What the twins kept showing was that diet explained more than the genes did.

Jun 2017

He co-founded Zoe

Milestone, and it changed everything. A company selling personalised nutrition, in which he holds a commercial interest.

The 2020s

24 Mar 2020

The symptom study

Milestone, and it changed everything. Millions of people reporting daily into an app, and an OBE for it.

27 Aug 2020

Spoon Fed

Milestone, and it changed his direction. The nutrition advice most people grew up with, taken apart one claim at a time.

Jun 2025

Ferment

Milestone. A fifth book, and the gut microbiome as the subject underneath all of them.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is fifteen thousand pairs of twins and what they showed: that a great deal of what people blame on their genes is not their genes at all.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

His left a settled medical career at thirty four to start a different one. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.

Tim Spector: frequently asked questions

What people ask about his line.

What is Tim Spector's character arc?
A consultant rheumatologist who left that settled career at thirty four for genetic epidemiology, built a registry of fifteen thousand sets of twins, and found that diet explained far more than the genes he had set out to study.
What is Tim Spector's TwinsUK?
The twin registry he founded in 1992, which has enrolled fifteen thousand sets of identical twins. Because identical twins share their genes, any difference between them is not genetic, which turns an old argument into a measurement.
What is Tim Spector's company Zoe?
A nutrition company he co-founded in 2017, which sells personalised dietary advice. He holds a commercial interest in it, which is worth stating plainly. Zoe also built the COVID Symptom Study app in 2020.
What is The Diet Myth by Tim Spector?
His book of 2015 on the science behind what people eat, and the first of his books to put the gut microbiome at the centre. Spoon Fed followed in 2020 and Food For Life in 2022.
Was Tim Spector given an OBE?
Yes, in 2020, for services to the response to the pandemic. The COVID Symptom Study app his company built had millions of people reporting their symptoms daily, which produced data no health system had.
Where did Tim Spector train?
At University College School in London, then in medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, and then at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London.
What books has Tim Spector written?
Identically Different in 2012, The Diet Myth in 2015, Spoon Fed in 2020, Food For Life in 2022 and Ferment in 2025. All five come out of what the twin registry kept showing him about food.
Where does this timeline of Tim Spector's life come from?
From the public record. Character Arc drew every moment on this line from the sources listed at the foot of the page, and the kind and weight of each moment are our editorial reading. Tim Spector isn't a Member of Character Arc and has no connection with it, and no feeling is attributed to him.
