Getting in, whoever you are.
Updated on 28 Aug 2026
1. What we're aiming for
Character Arc asks people to write about their own lives. That should be possible whether or not you use a mouse, whether or not you can see the screen, and whether or not movement on a page makes you feel unwell.
We're working towards WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the international standard for this. We're not there in every corner yet, and section 4 says where we know we fall short.
2. What's here now
Motion can be switched off. There's a Motion setting in Settings, and if your device already has Reduce Motion switched on, animations stay off whatever the app says. Worth knowing that some phones turn Reduce Motion on by themselves in low power mode.
Light and dark. Switch whenever you like, and the app follows your device by default.
Keyboard. You can move through the app with a keyboard, and the thing you're on shows a visible outline.
Screen readers. Structure, labels and headings are marked up so a screen reader can announce them, and things that change on their own, like a saved confirmation, are announced rather than appearing silently.
Text. You can zoom the page and the layout reflows rather than breaking.
3. Where you can help
Character Arc is small and we don't have every device or every assistive technology to test on. If something is hard to use, please tell us. We'd rather know.
Write to [email protected] and say what you were trying to do, what got in the way, and what you're using if you know it. We'll reply within 5 working days with what we can do and when.
If something blocks you completely, say so and we'll treat it as urgent.
4. Where we know we fall short
Being honest here is more useful than a clean statement.
- We haven't had an independent audit. What's on this page is our own assessment.
- The arc is a drawn line. It's a picture of your record, and we're still working out how to give the same information to someone using a screen reader. The underlying moments are all readable as text.
- Colour carries meaning in places. Some parts of the app use colour to distinguish one kind of thing from another, and not all of them have a second signal yet.
- Not everything has been tested with a screen reader, only the main paths.
- The share pages haven't been reviewed to the same standard as the app.
Each of these is on the list to fix. If one of them is blocking you, telling us moves it up.
5. This page changes as the app does
We'll update this statement as things improve or as we learn about problems we didn't know we had. We keep every version, and you can ask us for any of them.
