The character arc of Peter Attia

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born on 19 March 1973 in Toronto. Between then and now sit an engineering degree at Queen's in 1996, a Stanford medical degree in 2001, a general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins to 2006, a National Cancer Institute fellowship, McKinsey from 2008, the Nutrition Science Initiative in 2012, a longevity practice in 2014, a podcast in 2018 and Outlive in 2023. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Tap the line to pluck it. Hover or tap any mark for its card. Drawn from the public record of his life; the sources are at the foot of the page.

Who is Peter Attia?

He left surgery to ask a longer question.

He took a degree in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics at Queen's University at Kingston in 1996, and a medical degree at Stanford in 2001. He spent five years, from 2001 to 2006, in a general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is one of the hardest training programmes in medicine, and then two years as a research fellow at the National Cancer Institute.

Then he left. He joined McKinsey and Company in Palo Alto in 2008, which is an unusual thing for somebody who has just finished a surgical residency to do. In 2012 he co-founded the Nutrition Science Initiative with the journalist Gary Taubes, to fund rigorous trials in nutrition, a field that had run for decades on weaker evidence than it admitted.

In 2014 he founded a private practice in longevity medicine. The question underneath it is a change of framing rather than a new treatment: not how long a life lasts, but how long it stays good, and what is worth doing decades in advance. He launched The Peter Attia Drive podcast in 2018, published Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity in 2023, and appeared in the National Geographic series Limitless. He was briefly a CBS News contributor. He lives near Austin, Texas.

The moments

Peter Attia's timeline.

The 1990s

Jun 1996

Engineering at Queen's

Milestone, and it changed his direction. An engineer first, which is visible in everything he has done since.

The 2000s

Jun 2001

Stanford medicine

Milestone, and it changed everything. From engineering into medicine, which is a full restart.

Jul 2001

Surgery at Johns Hopkins

Milestone, and it changed everything. Five years in one of the hardest training programmes there is.

Jul 2006

The National Cancer Institute

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Two more years of training, on top of five.

1 Jan 2008

Practise surgery, or leave it

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: leave the operating room, taken, or practise as a surgeon. The practice, the podcast and Outlive all sit on this side of the decision, and none of them could have existed on the other.

Jun 2008

He left surgery

Setback, and it changed everything. Seven years of surgical training, set down. Almost nobody does this.

The 2010s

~2012

The Nutrition Science Initiative

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Money raised to run the trials a whole field had been getting by without.

Jun 2014

A longevity practice

Milestone, and it changed everything. Not how long a life lasts, but how long it stays good. That is the whole practice.

Jun 2018

The Drive begins

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Long interviews, at length, for people who wanted the detail.

The 2020s

28 Mar 2023

Outlive

Milestone, and it changed everything. Fifteen years after leaving surgery, the argument written down.

Jun 2025

Television, and after

Milestone. A television audience, taken on and then set down again.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a shift in the question a great many people now ask about their own health: not how long, but how long it stays good, and what that means for this decade.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

His left one of the hardest training programmes in medicine to ask a different question. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
