Research

What is measured, and what is not sold.

This page exists because you should be able to read exactly what happens to what you write, before you write anything.

Four commitments

Self report, never inference. Character Arc knows what you told it. It does not watch how long you hovered, guess your mood from your typing speed, or infer anything you did not say. If it is in your record, you put it there.

Aggregate patterns normalise, they never rank. Insight drawn from many people exists to tell you that a hard year after a career change is ordinary. It does not place you above or below anyone, because there is no correct life and no leaderboard.

Nothing is sold. Not your data, not anonymised, not aggregated, not to anyone. The company gets smarter from consented patterns. It does not have a second business.

You choose, and private means private. One shared patterns switch, off until you turn it on, and every stored row remembers the choice it was written under. A view built from consented data is physically incapable of including a row that was not.

What never leaves, at any tier

Prose. Your reflections, your letters, your notes. They stay in your vault and they are not included in any shared or aggregated view at any consent level, ever.

Sealed letters go further: they are locked on your device before they reach us, so nobody can open one early. That includes us, and it includes anyone who ever asks us for it.

What can be shared, if you choose it

Structure with no names and no words. An emotion word, a date, an area of life, a before and after. That is what makes it possible to eventually say something true like: most people rate a career move higher a year later than they did in the month it happened.

It only switches on for a group once the group is large enough that no single person can be picked out of it.

The nearest academic cousin

Ecological momentary assessment: asking people how something felt close to when it happened, rather than asking them to remember months later. That is the shape of what accumulates here, over years rather than weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

The things people ask about what we measure.

What is measured

What does Character Arc measure?
What you told it. Self report rather than inference: it doesn't watch how long you hovered, guess your mood from your typing speed, or infer anything you didn't say.
Do aggregate patterns rank me against other people?
No. They normalise rather than rank. A pattern exists to tell you that a hard year after a career change is ordinary, and there's no correct life here and no leaderboard.
What research does this resemble?
Ecological momentary assessment: asking people how something felt close to when it happened, rather than asking them to remember months later. That's the shape of what accumulates here, over years rather than weeks.

What is not sold

Is my data sold?
No. Not your data, not anonymised, not aggregated, not to anyone. The company gets smarter from consented patterns, and it doesn't have a second business.
Is my writing used to train anything?
No. Prose stays in your vault and is not included in any shared or aggregated view. Sealed letters go further: they're locked on your device before they reach us.
What can be shared, if I choose it?
Structure with no names and no words: an emotion, a date, an area of life, a before and after. It only switches on for a group once that group is large enough that no single person can be picked out of it.
