Who is Nir Eyal?

He wrote the manual, then the antidote.

He was born in Hadera and took his first degree at Emory University in 2001. He went to the Boston Consulting Group, founded a solar panel company in the early 2000s, and returned to study, taking an MBA at Stanford in 2008. Afterwards he co-founded and led a company selling advertising on Facebook, which is where the material for his first book came from.

From 2012 he lectured in marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and taught at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design there. He began writing at NirAndFar.com and set out what he called the hook model: trigger, action, variable reward, investment. Hooked, published in 2014, is the clearest account anybody has written of how products get into a daily routine and stay there.

Then he turned around. Indistractable, published in 2019, is about getting attention back, and argues that the problem is not only what the products do but what the person is trying not to feel. Writing both books is the interesting fact on this line; a great many people would have written only the first one and taken the consulting fees. Beyond Belief followed in 2026 and debuted on the New York Times bestseller list.
