Who is Kai-Fu Lee?

At fifty one they told him what he had left.

He was born in Taipei in 1961, the son of Li Tianmin, a legislator and historian from Sichuan, and was sent to the United States at eleven, to a high school in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He took a bachelor of science in computer science at Columbia summa cum laude in 1983, and a doctorate at Carnegie Mellon in 1988, on speech recognition. That work is the foundation of what every device that listens to you now does.

Then a career of building research organisations in the places they did not exist yet. Apple from 1990 to 1996 as a principal research scientist, where he demonstrated speech recognition on American morning television. Silicon Graphics from 1996. In 1998 Microsoft sent him to Beijing to found Microsoft Research China, which became Microsoft Research Asia and turned into one of the most productive computer science laboratories anywhere. In 2005 he moved to Google and ran Google China until 2009, then left to found Sinovation Ventures with an initial fund of a hundred and fifteen million dollars.

In 2013, at fifty one, he was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma. He recovered, and what he has written since is different in kind: AI Superpowers in 2018, about what artificial intelligence means for China and the United States, and AI 2041 in 2021, co-authored fiction about the same question. In 2023 he founded 01.AI and released an open source model that November, and Time named him to its list of the hundred most influential people in AI. His line is worth reading for 2013, and for the fact that the work after it is about people rather than machines.
