Who is Demis Hassabis?
The chess prodigy who taught machines to discover.
He was born in London in 1976 and found the chessboard early, reaching master standard at thirteen and playing for England as a boy. Games were more than a talent, they were a way of thinking, and at seventeen he co-designed and led the programming of Theme Park, a simulation game that sold in the millions. He could have spent a whole career building games. Instead he read the board differently: the real prize was not the next game but the machine that could learn to play any of them, and then learn far more.
So he changed direction. He took a degree at Cambridge and then a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, studying memory and imagination in the human brain, because he believed you could not build real intelligence without first understanding how the mind builds it. In 2010 he brought the two halves of his life together and co-founded DeepMind, a company whose stated aim was to solve intelligence and then use it to help solve everything else. Google bought it in 2014, and the laboratory kept its scientific mission.
The proof came in public. In 2016 his program AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, one of the greatest Go players who ever lived, at a game long thought beyond machines. Four years later AlphaFold answered a fifty year old question in biology, predicting the shape of nearly every protein known to science and giving the free result to researchers everywhere. In 2024 he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it and was knighted the same year. The 2020s
AlphaFold solved protein folding

A knighthood
Milestone. He was knighted for services to artificial intelligence, a formal mark of what the science had come to mean.
The Nobel Prize
