Cookies and storage

What we keep on your device.

Updated on 08 Sep 2026

1. The short version

Character Arc uses very little. Almost everything on this page is your own browser remembering things for you, not us following you around.

There's one measurement cookie, and it's off until you say yes. There are no advertising cookies and no tracking pixels.

The only companies that see anything are the ones that have to. Our host serves the pages, and a security service in front of them sees each request, which is how bad traffic gets stopped before it reaches us; both see the request itself, not what you write. Google Analytics sees nothing at all unless you agree to measurement, and then only what section 3 describes.

2. What's needed to make the app work

These can't be switched off, because without them there's no app.

Signing you in. Your browser holds the token that keeps you signed in, so you're not asked for your password on every screen.

Your draft arc, before you have an account. Everything you enter in the first setup lives only in your own browser until you save it. Clearing your browser storage erases it for good.

Small conveniences. Which section you last opened, whether you've already seen a particular one-time explanation, and a note that you've dismissed a message so it doesn't reappear. These stay on your device and are never sent to us.

Your invite code, if you arrived through one. When someone invites you, the link carries a code so we know who to thank. It's held for 180 days, it never identifies you, and it disappears when you make an account or when the time runs out. If you arrive without a code, nothing is stored.

3. Measurement, and only if you say yes

If you agree to measurement, Google Analytics sets a cookie so it can tell one visit from another.

We ask before it's switched on. The first time you arrive, a bar at the bottom of the page asks whether measurement is alright. Both answers are buttons of equal weight, and declining is a real choice that costs you nothing.

Nothing is measured until you say yes, and we mean nothing. Google's measurement code isn't even fetched until you agree. Saying no, or not answering, means it never loads, so there's no cookie and nothing at all reaches Google.

That's a stronger position than the usual one. Most sites load the code and switch its cookies off, which still lets Google receive a small signal on every page. We'd rather the sentence "nothing is measured" be literally true.

No advertising storage is ever switched on at all.

You're only asked once, and you can come back to it. The site and the app share the same answer, so answering on your way in carries through. Cookie preferences at the foot of any page reopens the question, and the switch in Settings does the same thing from inside the app.

What's measured, and what's never read, is set out in section 10 of the Privacy Policy.

4. Advertising

There are none. No advertising cookies, no tracking pixels, no advertising networks, and nothing about what you do here is used to target you anywhere else.

If that ever changes, we'll tell you 30 days beforehand and ask you first.

5. What we don't do

  • No cookies from social networks, no share buttons that phone home
  • No fingerprinting your device
  • No session recording, and no watching your mouse or your typing
  • No selling anything to anyone

5a. Turning Google Analytics off everywhere

If you'd rather Google Analytics never measured you on any website, not just this one, Google publishes a browser add-on that switches it off entirely:

tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

That's Google's own tool rather than ours, and it works whatever you chose here.

6. Managing it yourself

You can clear or block all of this in your browser settings, and every browser lets you do it. Be aware that clearing everything signs you out and erases an unsaved draft arc.

For measurement specifically, the switch in Settings is easier and does exactly what it says.
