How it works
How Character Arc works.
Character Arc is a life timeline app that makes a game of your real life: your whole story as one line, so you can see what shaped you and decide what happens next.
Here is the whole game, in the order you'll meet it. Every chapter is a minute to read, and none of it is a test.
The loop
Live it, add it, see it, choose.
Everything in Character Arc feeds one line. You add what happened, the line shows you its shape, and that shape is what you decide from: an intention to aim at, a crossroads to weigh, a quest to prove something to yourself.
What you do next becomes the next thing you add. The line keeps going, and it gets truer the longer you keep it.
Your line
It starts the day you were born.
Your arc is your life drawn as one line. You add moments, the real things that happened, and each one sits at its own date. A milestone lifts the line, a setback dips it, and an everyday moment rests on it without moving it.
A feeling that held for a while can be a stretch, which rises, holds across its span, then settles. Quiet years simply run flat, because nothing on your line fades just because time passed.
Can't remember the exact day? The month or the year is enough, and the mark sits softly at that precision.
How much it mattered
Some moments bend the whole line.
Every moment asks how much it mattered, in four steps: a moment, it left a mark, it changed my direction, or it changed everything. The more it mattered, the further your line turns.
The last two are turning points. They wear a ring, so the moments that changed your story stand out when you look back across the whole line.

Turning pointHow it felt
You name the feeling. Nobody guesses it.
Each moment, and each quest rep, asks how it felt in three small steps. First, was it negative, neutral or positive? Then pick the word that fits. Last, say how strongly, from one to ten.
Nothing is filled in for you, so a five always means you chose five, and neutral is a complete answer on its own. Over time the numbers show something a diary can't: the same kind of day starting to feel lighter.

The road ahead
A wish becomes a date.
To the right of Today your line runs dashed. That's the road ahead, and it's where your intentions sit: the things you're aiming at, each placed on the day you hope to reach it, with a picture if you like.
When the day comes and it happened, the hollow mark fills in and becomes a moment on the line you've already lived.
Crossroads
Hard decisions, laid out as paths.
When you're torn, you open a crossroads. Each way forward becomes a numbered path fanning out from Today. You write what each would mean, rank them, and say how easily each could be undone.
Choose when you're ready. The paths you didn't take stay in the record, so later you can read what you really thought at the time rather than the version memory tells.
Quests
One brave thing, repeated.
A quest starts with a belief about yourself you'd like to be wrong about. You choose one real action that tests it, embark, and do it five times. At every rep you name how it felt, the same three steps as a moment.
That's how you watch a feeling change: afraid at the first rep, calm by the last. Its pennant is planted on the day you embarked, in the colour of the pillar it grows, hollow while it's open and filled once it's done. A finished quest arrives on your line as a milestone you earned.
Your words
Where the words live.
A moment stays short on purpose. When there's more to say, you write a reflection and connect it to the moment, the quest or the crossroads it belongs to.
A sealed letter is written now and opened on a day you choose. It's locked on your device before it reaches us, so nobody can open it early. Your words stay yours, whatever you choose to share.
A reflection, connected to a moment
The first big client said yes, and I spent the evening waiting for them to change their mind.
A sealed letter
Opens on your fortieth birthday. Nobody can read it before then, including us.
Character
A game where the character is you.
Character is the counted side of your arc. Your level is your age, so it's true before you add anything, and everything you live earns Experience. Experience only grows, setbacks included, because you lived through them.
It grows three ways: Think, when you work something out; Feel, when you name what something was like; and Do, when you act on the hard thing. You choose the areas of life that count for you, and six pillars deepen as you go. Nothing here can be bought.
Experience only grows. These bars are a sketch, never a score to beat.
Models
Better ways to see a hard moment.
Models are thinking frameworks for the moment you're actually deciding something, each with the mechanism underneath it named. Use one, then write down what happened.
When one lands, you can keep the Mindset Shift: what you believe about yourself now, before and after, in your own words.
A Mindset Shift
Before: I put everyone else first.
After: I can care about people without disappearing for them.
Seeing it back
Your own patterns, in your own words.
Visionary adds the Mirror. Every two weeks it reads what you've put in and reflects the patterns back to you, using your own words. It describes what has been happening, and it never tells you what's wrong with you.
From a Mirror
The last four times you wrote about work, the word you chose was tired.
It describes. It never diagnoses, and it waits until you want it.
The controls
Every section, one wheel.
The app turns on a wheel of sections at the foot of the screen. Each one holds a part of the game, and all of them feed the same line.
The one you'll use most is the plus beside Today on your arc: it adds a moment, and everything else grows from there.
