Who is Arthur Mensch?
The frontier was supposed to be American, and he built one in Paris.
He was born in Sèvres in 1992 and went through the French system at its steepest: the Ecole Polytechnique from 2011, Telecom Paris, the MVA master's at the Ecole normale superieure Paris-Saclay, and then a doctorate between 2015 and 2018 at Inria and NeuroSpin on predictive models and stochastic optimisation for large scale functional brain imaging. That is not a language model background. It is a mathematician learning to make very large amounts of noisy data yield something.
He joined DeepMind in Paris in late 2020 and spent nearly three years there on large language models, multimodal systems and retrieval. It was, at that moment, close to the best job in the field. The assumption across the industry was that frontier systems would be built in California and London by a handful of very well funded laboratories, and that Europe would use them rather than make them.
In May 2023 he left, and founded Mistral AI with Guillaume Lample and Timothee Lacroix. In June, within weeks of the company existing, it raised a hundred and five million euros, among the largest seed rounds Europe had seen, on a plan and three reputations. By December 2023 it had raised three hundred and eighty five million more at around two billion, six hundred million in June 2024 at close to six billion, and in September 2025 one point seven billion at eleven point seven billion, in a round where the chip equipment maker ASML took a stake. In May 2026 the company renamed its assistant Vibe. His line is worth reading because the interesting decision was leaving the best job in the field to compete with it.
