Who is Nigel Ng?
A data science job, and an uncle who judges you.
He grew up in the Cheras district of Kuala Lumpur, one of three children, with a mother who kept the house and a father who sold cars. He finished at Chong Hwa Independent High School in 2009 and moved to the United States to study at Northwestern University, majoring in engineering and taking a minor in philosophy, and graduated in 2014. He then worked as a data scientist, which is not a job people usually leave.
He started doing comedy in Britain in the evenings. He was runner up for a new act prize in 2015 and won the Amused Moose Laugh-Off in 2016, reached the finals of two other new comedian competitions, made his television debut on Comedy Central in 2018 and was nominated for best newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019. That is seven or eight years of ordinary, unglamorous club work before anything happened.
What happened came from somebody else's idea. His podcast partner, the comedian Evelyn Mok, invented a middle aged Asian uncle character for a sitcom with him in mind, and he developed it in short sketches before moving it to YouTube. In July 2020 Uncle Roger watched a television cook make egg fried rice, and the video reached an enormous audience within days. He and the cook then appeared together and made a video as friends, which is the gracious version of that story. The accent has been criticised in public by cooks and writers who argue it licenses others to imitate Asian speech, and he has answered that an exaggerated accent is not in itself discrimination. Both are part of the record. He has since judged cooking competitions, appeared on panel shows and cooked with some of the best known chefs in the world.
