Who was Virgil Abloh?
He trained to build bridges, and rebuilt fashion instead.
He was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1980, to Ewe parents who had come from Ghana. His mother was a seamstress and taught him to sew, and his father managed a paint company. He did not go to fashion school. He took a degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2002 and a master's in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2006, which meant he entered fashion at a disadvantage on paper and with a way of thinking almost nobody else in the industry had.
The way in was the long way round. In 2009, at twenty-nine, he took an internship at Fendi in Rome alongside Kanye West, both of them well past the usual age for one. He art-directed Watch the Throne in 2011, which brought a Grammy nomination, and started his first label, Pyrex Vision, in 2012, an experiment that plenty of the industry dismissed. Off-White followed in Milan in 2013, and built the audience that made the rest possible. He reached the final of the LVMH Prize in 2015 and did not win it.
On 26 March 2018 Louis Vuitton named him artistic director of its menswear, the first person of African descent to hold the post at the largest brand in the group, and his first show ran in Paris that June. Figures of Speech, a museum exhibition of his work, opened in Chicago in 2019, the same year he was diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma. He told almost nobody, kept designing, kept showing, and LVMH took a majority stake in Off-White in 2021. He died on 28 November 2021, aged 41. His line is worth reading because he built the whole of it from outside, and then held the door.
