Who is Celine Song?

Ten years in theatre, and then a first film at the Oscars.

She was born Song Ha-Young in South Korea in 1988, to a father who is a filmmaker and a mother who is an illustrator and graphic designer. When she was twelve the family moved to Markham, Ontario, and she chose the forename Celine for herself on arriving. Choosing your own name at twelve is a small thing that tells you a great deal.

She took a BA in psychology with a philosophy minor at Queen's University in 2010, and then an MFA in playwriting at Columbia in 2014. What followed was a decade of theatre, the kind that does not make anybody famous: Ars Nova's Play Group, fellowships with the Public Theater and the Playwrights Realm, and a play called Endlings that premiered at the American Repertory Theater in 2019 and reached New York Theatre Workshop in March 2020, where the pandemic closed it. In November 2020 she directed a version of The Seagull inside The Sims 4, on Twitch, which is either a joke or a serious answer to a closed theatre, and it was both.

She was a staff writer on The Wheel of Time in 2021. Then Past Lives, her first film, premiered at Sundance in 2023 and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards, making her the first Asian woman nominated in that screenplay category. Materialists followed on 13 June 2025 and took over a hundred million dollars worldwide. She has directed a music video, sat on the Marrakech festival jury, been announced as writer of a sequel, and in 2026 received the Whiting Award in Drama. She married the writer Justin Kuritzkes in 2016. Her line is worth reading for the decade of plays that nobody outside the theatre noticed.

13 Jun 2025

Materialists

~2026

The Whiting Award

Milestone. An award for the writing, from the world she started in.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a category that had never had somebody like her in it, and a reminder that a debut is usually the tenth year of something else.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers spent ten unnoticed years in theatre before the film anybody saw. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
