Who is Shonda Rhimes?

She was born in Chicago in 1970, took a degree in English and film studies at Dartmouth College in 1991 and a master of fine arts in screenwriting at the University of Southern California. She has been working in television since 1995.
In 2005 she created Grey's Anatomy, which is still running more than twenty years later and is among the longest running scripted dramas in American television. Private Practice followed in 2007 and Scandal in 2012, and she executive produced How to Get Away with Murder from 2014 and Bridgerton from 2020. On 14 August 2017 she signed an exclusive multi-year development deal with Netflix, extended in July 2021, which changed what a showrunner could expect to be worth and how the whole industry negotiated afterwards.
The book is the reason she sits in this gallery rather than only in a television history. Year of Yes, published in November 2015, is about a specific problem: she was, by her own account, someone who said no to everything outside the writing room, and spent a year saying yes instead, to every invitation and every thing that frightened her. Writing that down, at the height of a career built on being in control of the room, is a more exposed thing to do than any of the television. She won a Golden Globe in 2006, an International Emmy Founders Award in 2016, entered the Television Hall of Fame in 2017, was appointed CBE in 2024 and won a Daytime Emmy in 2025.
