Who is Jon Batiste?
He left the nightly show to write a symphony.
He was born into the Batiste family of New Orleans, a dynasty that runs through the brass bands of the city, and at eight he was playing percussion and drums with the Batiste Brothers Band. At eleven, at his mother's suggestion, he switched to the piano and took classical lessons every Saturday for seven years. He also taught himself by transcribing music from video games, which is a very particular kind of ear training and produced a composer who does not treat any music as beneath him. He released a first album at seventeen, graduated from high school in 2004, and took a bachelor's and a master's in jazz studies at Juilliard, in 2008 and 2011.
At twenty he made his debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, producing and performing his own show, then ran workshops in inner-city schools across the Netherlands and took six young Dutch musicians to Carnegie Hall for a show that ended with a piece he had written for choir, jazz combo and orchestra. Social Music in 2013 spent over a month at the top of the jazz charts. In 2015 he and his band Stay Human became the house band on a nightly American television show, which for a jazz musician is the most visible job there is, and he held it for seven years.
In 2020 he co-composed the score for an animated film and won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a Grammy and a BAFTA for it. He has won eight Grammy Awards from twenty five nominations, including Album of the Year for We Are. In 2022 he left the television job. A documentary released in 2023 follows him composing his first symphony, which is what he left to do. He played a musician in an ensemble film in 2024 and wrote its score, made a record putting Beethoven next to the blues, and won Best Americana Album at the Grammys in 2026. In May 2026 he announced three more piano records for the summer.
