The character arc of Lilly Singh
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born 26 September 1988 in Scarborough, Toronto, to Punjabi parents from Hoshiarpur. Between then and now sit a psychology degree at York in 2010, a channel started that October instead of graduate school, monetisation in 2012, a documentary in 2016, a bestseller in 2017, a name set down in 2019, a network chat show from September 2019 to June 2021, a film in 2024 and a media network in 2025. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Lilly Singh?
She turned down graduate school for a camera in her bedroom.
She was born in Scarborough in 1988 to Malvindar Kaur and Sukvindar Singh, Punjabi immigrants from Hoshiarpur, and was raised Sikh. She took a bachelor of arts in psychology at York University in 2010, and the sensible next step, the one everybody expected, was graduate school.
She did not take it. In October 2010 she started a YouTube channel under the name IISuperwomanII and made videos instead. It is easy to forget how unserious that looked in 2010. In 2012 she passed a hundred thousand subscribers and the platform approved her for monetisation, which is the moment a hobby becomes an income. By 2016 she was the third highest paid creator on YouTube, at about seven and a half million dollars, and had released a documentary, A Trip to Unicorn Island.
How to Be a Bawse, her book, topped the New York Times list in 2017. In August 2019 she dropped the Superwoman name she had built everything under, which is a harder decision than it sounds. That September, NBC gave her A Little Late with Lilly Singh, and she became the first person of Indian descent to host an American late-night talk show. It ran until June 2021. Since then she produced, wrote and starred in the film Doin' It in 2024, launched Hyphen8, a media network for South Asian creators, in 2025, and York University gave her an honorary doctorate in October 2025. Her line is worth reading for 2010, and for how ordinary the sensible option looked.
The moments
Lilly Singh's timeline.
The 2010s
A psychology degree
Milestone. The degree, and then the expectation of graduate school on top of it.
Graduate school, or the camera
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: make videos, taken, or go to graduate school. By 2016 she was the third highest paid creator on YouTube, and in 2019 NBC gave her a late-night show.
A channel, not graduate school
Milestone, and it changed everything. The plan was a postgraduate degree. She bought a camera instead.
A hundred thousand subscribers
Milestone, and it changed her direction. The moment it stopped being a hobby and started being an income.
A Trip to Unicorn Island
Milestone. A tour, and a film about the tour, made while the channel was still the main thing.
Third highest paid
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Six years from a bedroom camera to third on that list.
A New York Times bestseller
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Number one, on a list that does not care how many subscribers you have.
She dropped the name
Setback, and it changed everything. Nine years of brand, set down on purpose. That is a harder call than it looks.
A desk on NBC
Milestone, and it changed everything. The first. A format that had existed for decades without anybody like her behind the desk.
The 2020s
The show ended
Setback, and it changed everything. Under two years. Late-night shows end; it is still an ending.
Doin' It
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Three jobs on one film, which is the creator habit carried into cinema.
She built Hyphen8
Milestone, and it changed everything. Having gone first, she built the thing that means the next ones do not have to.
An honorary doctorate
Milestone. The university she left for a camera gave her a doctorate for it.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a door held open: a late-night desk that had never had somebody like her behind it, and a network she built so the next ones do not have to wait.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers turned down the safe next step for something nobody took seriously. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
