Who is Katrina Lake?

She was born in San Francisco in December 1982, the daughter of a doctor and a teacher, and grew up curious about how people choose what they buy. She studied economics at Stanford, graduating in 2005, and then spent two years in management consulting at The Parthenon Group, advising retailers on a business that was moving online faster than most of them could follow. What she kept noticing was a gap: shopping online was efficient, but it had lost the person who once knew your taste.
In 2011, while studying for an MBA at Harvard Business School, she started the company in her apartment, boxing up clothes by hand and mailing them to a handful of early customers. She called it Rack Habit at first, then Stitch Fix. The idea was simple to say and hard to build: pair a human stylist with data about what each person actually kept, so a box that arrives at your door feels chosen for you. Many investors passed, unconvinced that women's apparel was a serious technology business, and she has said that if she had listened to all of them she would not be here.
By 2017 the company was serving millions of people and its revenue had grown past seven hundred million dollars. That November she took Stitch Fix public on the Nasdaq, one of the youngest women ever to lead a company to the market and, by many accounts, the only woman to take a technology company public that year. She later handed over the top job and chaired the board, then returned as chief executive in early 2023 to steady the company she had built.
