A producer heard her sing while on holiday on the island, and at sixteen she was flown to America to record. A record deal followed in 2005, and then the records themselves: her first number one with SOS in 2006, and the breakthrough of Umbrella in 2007, which held the top spot for seven weeks. She would go on to become one of the best selling artists the charts have known.
The line does not stop at music, and that is the point of it. In 2017 she opened Fenty Beauty with forty foundation shades at once, built for a range of skin tones that the beauty aisle had long skipped, and the idea reset an industry that had assumed it would not pay.
