The character arc of Rihanna

Born 20 February 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados, raised in Bridgetown. Between then and now sit a hard home, a stall where she sold clothes beside her father, a flight to America at sixteen, a first number one, the breakthrough of Umbrella, a beauty house opened with forty foundation shades, a self-made fortune, and the honour of national hero. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Rihanna?

A girl from Bridgetown who built an empire.

She grew up in Bridgetown, Barbados, in a home strained by her father's addiction, and as a girl she sold clothes beside him at a street stall. A producer heard her sing while on holiday on the island, and at sixteen she was flown to America to record. A record deal followed in 2005, and then the records themselves: her first number one with SOS in 2006, and the breakthrough of Umbrella in 2007, which held the top spot for seven weeks. She would go on to become one of the best selling artists the charts have known.

The line does not stop at music, and that is the point of it. In 2017 she opened Fenty Beauty with forty foundation shades at once, built for a range of skin tones that the beauty aisle had long skipped, and the idea reset an industry that had assumed it would not pay. Savage X Fenty followed in 2018. In August 2021 Forbes counted her a self-made billionaire, her fortune built far more from the beauty house than from the songs.

Through all of it she carried Barbados with her. She founded the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012, named for her grandparents, to fund education and emergency relief, and on the day her country became a republic in 2021 it declared her a national hero. Her line is worth reading because the girl at the stall did not wait to be handed a bigger life. She built the thing that had been missing and sold it to the world.

The moments

Rihanna's timeline.

The 2000s

~2001

Selling clothes with her father

Everyday, and it changed her direction. As a girl she worked a street stall beside her father, selling clothes and scarves.

~2004

Flown to America at sixteen

Milestone, and it changed her direction. A producer heard her sing on the island, and at sixteen she flew to the United States to record.

Feb 2005

Signed her record deal

Milestone. A demo and an audition became a contract, and a Barbadian teenager had a label behind her.

29 Aug 2005

The 2010s

~2012

The Clara Lionel Foundation

~2016

An industry that doubted

Setback, and it changed her direction. The received wisdom held that a wide, inclusive shade range would not sell. She set out to prove it wrong.

1 Jun 2016

Another album, or build a brand

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: pour it into Fenty, taken, or keep the records coming. Fenty Beauty opened with forty foundation shades and, inside four years, helped make her a self-made billionaire.

8 Sep 2017

Fenty Beauty, forty shades

Milestone, and it changed everything. She opened with forty foundation shades at once, built for a range of skin tones the aisle had skipped.

11 May 2018

Savage X Fenty begins

Milestone. A lingerie line built on the same idea, that everyone should see themselves in what is sold.

The 2020s

4 Aug 2021

Named a billionaire

Milestone. Forbes counted her a self-made billionaire, her fortune built far more from Fenty than from the songs.

30 Nov 2021

12 Feb 2023

The Super Bowl stage

Milestone. She headlined the halftime show, her first live set in years, watched by more than a hundred million.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What she set moving is already everywhere: the shade that finally matched a face the aisle had skipped, and every person from a small place who decided it would not be the size of their arc.

In her words

Quotes by Rihanna

It was important that every woman felt included in this brand.
Rihanna to TIME, on Fenty Beauty, 2017.
All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return. To me, that is a humanitarian.
Rihanna, Harvard Humanitarian of the Year speech, 2017.

Your turn

Every story draws a unique line.

Hers is decades in and still building. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about three minutes.
