Who is Marie Kondo?

She started the business at nineteen.

She was born in Osaka in 1984, went to a Quaker girls' school in Tokyo and read sociology at Tokyo Woman's Christian University. At nineteen, while still an undergraduate, she founded her organising consulting business. Her final university thesis was on tidying, seen from the perspective of gender, which means the subject was already her academic work as well as her trade.

She also spent five years as an attendant at a Shinto shrine, and that is not incidental. The method she later published treats a house as a place with an order to it and possessions as things to be thanked before they are let go, which is a shrine attendant's habit of mind applied to a wardrobe.

Her book was published in Japanese in 2011 and in English as The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up in 2014, going out in more than thirty countries. The instruction everybody remembers is the simplest one: take each item in your hands and keep it only if it sparks joy. Time named her on its hundred most influential people in 2015. Netflix released Tidying Up with Marie Kondo in 2019, for which she was nominated for an Emmy as outstanding host, and Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo in 2021. Joy at Work, written with Scott Sonenshein, came in 2020.
