Who is Ayra Starr?

One song on her own page, and the phone lit up.

She was born in Benin and raised in Cotonou and Lagos, of Nigerian and Yoruba heritage with both parents from Kwara State, and she speaks Yoruba, French, English and Nigerian Pidgin. She is the second of five children and played music as a child with her older brother. As a teenager she gravitated to the arts and her father often urged her to put the academic work first, which she did: she took a degree in international relations and political science at a university in Cotonou. Her mother encouraged the singing.

She had finished second on a Nigerian television dance show as a child. In August 2018 she signed with a Lagos modelling agency, and in 2019 began posting covers of other people's songs online. Then, in December 2019, she uploaded an original song of her own called Damage to her own page. The founder of one of the biggest record labels in the country sent her a message saying he was interested and asking to meet. Her first sessions at that studio were her introduction to professional recording, and she spent 2020 in it.

Her self-titled debut extended play came out in January 2021 with the single Away, and her debut album, 19 & Dangerous, followed the same year. Its lead single became the first song by a solo female artist to reach number one on a national top fifty chart, and she was ranked third on a major magazine's new artist list that August. In 2022 the song Rush charted in several countries including Switzerland, Ireland and the United Kingdom and brought a Grammy nomination for best African music performance. Her second album came in 2024 and her third in August 2026. She was twenty when the Grammy nomination arrived.

The moments

Ayra Starr's timeline.

The 2000s

14 Jun 2002

Born in Benin

Everyday. Two countries, four languages, and five children in the house.

The 2010s

~2012

Second on a dance show

Milestone. Second place, on television, before she was in secondary school.

~2017

Her father says study first

Setback, and it changed her direction. One parent said study, the other said sing, and she did both.

Aug 2018

A modelling contract

Milestone. A first professional contract, in a different trade entirely.

~2019

Covers, posted online

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Other people's songs, sung into a phone.

1 Nov 2019

Post her own song

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: put her own out, taken, or keep singing covers. A label founder messaged her, she spent 2020 recording, and her debut came out in 2021.

Dec 2019

One original song

Milestone, and it changed everything. She posted one song she had written herself, and the message came.

The 2020s

~2020

A year in the studio

Milestone, and it changed her direction. A whole year learning how a record is actually made.

22 Jan 2021

A debut, at eighteen

Milestone, and it changed everything. Eighteen years old, with her name on the front of a record.

6 Aug 2021

First woman to number one

Milestone, and it changed everything. No solo woman had reached the top of that chart before her.

16 Sep 2022

Rush, and a Grammy nomination

Milestone, and it changed everything. One song, four countries' charts, and a Grammy nomination at twenty.

31 May 2024

The Year I Turned 21

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Two more albums, and she is still in her twenties.

Lagos is where the studio is and Cotonou is where the schooling was, and she works in four languages. What it has set moving is already audible on charts that had no room for it: a woman from West Africa singing in her own accent reached the top of a national chart alone, which nobody had done before her.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers took the degree her father wanted and posted the song anyway. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
