Who is Bad Bunny?
They told him to sing in English, and he never once did.
He was born in 1994 and grew up in Vega Baja, in a barrio called Almirante Sur. His father drove a truck, his mother taught school, and he sang in the church choir until he was about thirteen. He left school in 2012, enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo to study audiovisual communications, and left without finishing. What he did instead was work at an Econo supermarket, bagging groceries and working the till, and put songs on SoundCloud in the evenings.
For several years almost nobody listened. He had been writing since he was fourteen, and the uploads accumulated without an audience, a record label, or any obvious reason to keep going. Then in 2016 a track called Diles was heard by the producer DJ Luian, and he was signed to Hear This Music. X 100pre came out on Christmas Eve 2018.
What followed has no real precedent. YHLQMDLG and El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo both arrived in 2020, and the second became the first entirely Spanish-language album to reach number one in the United States. He was the most streamed artist in the world in 2020, 2021, 2022 and again in 2025. Un Verano Sin Ti in 2022 was the most played record of its year anywhere. Then he did something stranger: Debi Tirar Mas Fotos in 2025 was a record about Puerto Rico itself, and he played thirty nights at home in San Juan rather than touring. On 1 February 2026 it won Album of the Year at the Grammys, the first entirely Spanish-language album ever to do so, and a week later he headlined the Super Bowl. His line is worth reading because at every point the advice was to cross over, and he never did.
