Who is Burna Boy?
They billed him small, so he named himself a giant.
He was born in Port Harcourt in 1991 as Damini Ogulu. His maternal grandfather, Benson Idonije, had once managed Fela Kuti, which means the music was in the house rather than on the radio. He went to England to study, media technology at Sussex from 2008 and then media communications at Oxford Brookes, and left without finishing. He came home to Port Harcourt, took a year long internship, and started again from there.
L.I.F.E came in 2013 and did well in Nigeria. On a Spaceship followed in 2015 to less. It was Outside, in January 2018, that broke him internationally. Then in 2019 he was booked for a large American festival and the poster printed his name in type so small that it was barely there. He objected publicly and demanded to be billed as what he called an African giant, and a great many people thought that was arrogant. In July that year he released an album called African Giant.
It was nominated for a Grammy and lost, in January 2020, to Angelique Kidjo. He made Twice as Tall next, and on 15 March 2021 that one won. Love, Damini followed in 2022, and in July 2023 he became the first African artist to headline and sell out a stadium in the United States, at Citi Field in New York, having played the Champions League final in Istanbul a month earlier. No Sign of Weakness came in July 2025, and on 11 June 2026 he sang the official anthem of the World Cup with Shakira at the Estadio Azteca.
