Who is Aitana Bonmatí?

She was born in Catalonia to two teachers of Catalan language and literature, who instilled a love of reading in her early. The first thing on her line is not football at all. Spanish naming custom put the father's surname first, and her parents wanted the mother's. They could not do it legally when she was born, so her mother registered as a single parent and for the first two years of her life she carried a different pair of names. Her parents campaigned, took a case to parliament, sought legal advice and put a proposal together, and in May 1999 her mother went on television to argue for it. The law changed late that year and was ratified in early 2000. She was one of the first people in Spain to carry her mother's surname first. In 2023 she said to her parents that they fought for change and succeeded, and that she carries that fight and that resilience in her blood.
She joined Barcelona in 2012 and spent six years in its academy, was promoted to the first team ahead of the 2016 season, and made appearances off the bench until her breakout in the 2018 season. With the club she has won seven league titles, eight national cups, five super cups, four regional cups and four Champions Leagues, including three trebles and a continental quadruple. She was named player of the match when the club won its first Champions League in 2021, and became the centre of the team in the two seasons after it.
Internationally she came through the under-seventeen, under-nineteen and under-twenty teams, winning two European youth championships and finishing runner-up in two youth World Cups. She moved into the senior squad in 2017, played at a World Cup in 2019 and at a European championship, and had a starring role at the 2023 World Cup, which Spain won and where she took the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament. She has won the Ballon d'Or Feminin in 2023, 2024 and 2025, which makes her the first player ever to win it three times, along with the world governing body's player award twice and the European player of the year award.
