Born 23 October 1954 in Pingtung County, Taiwan, into an academic family. Between then and now sit two failed university entrance examinations, a move across the world to study film, roughly six years at home in his thirties while his wife Jane Lin earned the family's keep, a first feature at nearly forty, the global reach of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and two Academy Awards for Best Director. Who is Ang Lee?
The lost years were the making of him.
He was raised in a family that measured a life by examinations, and he failed the university entrance test twice, a private shame in a household headed by a school principal. What the test could not measure was the one thing he could do. He found the stage at an arts school in Taipei, then moved to the United States to study theatre and film, and finished his degree at New York University in 1985.
Then came the part of the line that runs flat. For about six years, from his early to middle thirties, he stayed home with the children and wrote scripts that did not sell, while his wife, the microbiologist Jane Lin, carried the family on a modest salary. He has told the story himself: at his lowest he thought about studying computers to earn a wage, and she told him to keep his one gift, because the world had enough people who could work computers and did not need him for that. He credits her for the years that everyone else counted as empty.
His first feature, Pushing Hands, arrived when he was nearly forty. The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman followed, then Sense and Sensibility in English, then the worldwide reach of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. In 2006 he became the first Asian director to win the Academy Award for Best Director, for Brokeback Mountain, and he won it a second time in 2013 for Life of Pi. His line is worth reading because its flattest stretch, the years without work, is the stretch he says built the rest.

The 1970s
Failed the entrance exams

Found the stage in Taipei

Crossed the world to study

The 1980s

Six years at home
Setback, and it changed everything. For about six years his wife, the microbiologist Jane Lin, carried the family while he stayed home, wrote, and waited.
Keep the dream, or earn a wage
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: hold on to film, taken, or study computers for a job. His wife told him the world had enough people who could work computers and did not need him for that, so he stayed with his one gift. Three years later Pushing Hands began the career that reached two Best Director Oscars.
The 1990s

Milestone. The third of his early Taiwan set films, and a second foreign film nomination, closing the trilogy that began his name.
Sense and Sensibility
Milestone, and it changed his direction. His first English language film, from Jane Austen, which showed he could cross cultures and won wide acclaim.
The 2000s
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Milestone, and it changed his direction. A martial arts film in Mandarin that reached the whole world and won four Academy Awards, one of them for best foreign film.
Best Director, Brokeback Mountain
Milestone, and it changed everything. He became the first Asian, and first person of colour, to win the Academy Award for Best Director.
The 2010s
Best Director, Life of Pi
Milestone, and it changed everything. A second Best Director award, for a film long thought impossible to make, about a boy and a tiger on the sea.
The 2020s
Directing again at seventy one
Milestone. He began his next feature, Gold Mountain, a Gold Rush story, his first narrative film since 2019.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. At seventy one he is directing again, and the flat years near its start are the reason it is drawn at all: proof that a stretch which looks like nothing can be the ground everything after it stands on.
