Who is Zoe Tay?
She did not like it at first.
She was named Model of the Year in 1987, and in 1988 was crowned champion of the inaugural Star Search, which brought a three year contract with the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, now Mediacorp. Aileen Tan was placed second in the same contest. It is an unusually clean beginning: one competition, one contract, and a career.
The source is blunt about what came next. She had initially disliked acting, and began to feel differently about the craft after her role in Crime and Passion in 1991. Whatever happened in that part, the record of the three decades after it is a record of somebody who stayed. She won a Top Ten Most Popular Female Artiste award at the Star Awards every year for ten consecutive years from its inception in 1994, took Best Actress in 1996 for The Golden Pillow, and shares the record for the most consecutive nominations in the category with seven from 1995 to 2001.
In 2004 she was the first actress given the All-Time Favourite Artiste award. She played a terminally ill woman in Love Cuts in 2010, took her first fully English-speaking role in Mister John in 2013, and a wax figure of her has been on display at Madame Tussauds Singapore since 2014. She won Best Actress again in 2017 for You Can Be an Angel 2, and a fourth time at the Star Awards 2021 for My Guardian Angels, becoming the first actress to win two consecutive Best Actress awards.
