Who is Douglas Stuart?

He wrote it in the evenings.

He was born in Sighthill, Glasgow in 1976, took a degree at the Scottish College of Textiles, now part of Heriot-Watt University, and a master's at the Royal College of Art in London. At twenty four he moved to New York, and he worked in fashion design for more than twenty years, at Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic and Jack Spade.

That is a successful career on its own terms. He was senior director of design at Banana Republic while he was writing his first novel, which means the book was written in evenings and on weekends by somebody with a full and demanding day job. It took years and it was turned down repeatedly before it found a publisher.

Shuggie Bain was published in 2020 and won the Booker Prize that year, making him the second Scottish writer to win it. A first novel winning the Booker is rare enough; a first novel written after hours by a working fashion director is close to unheard of. Young Mungo followed in 2022 and John of John in 2026. He holds dual British and American citizenship and lives in Manhattan.

The moments

Douglas Stuart's timeline.

The 1990s

Jun 1997

A textiles degree

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A textiles degree in Scotland, and nothing yet pointing at a novel.

Jun 1999

The Royal College of Art

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A master's in design, and a way out of Glasgow.

The 2000s

Jun 2000

New York at twenty four

Milestone, and it changed everything. Twenty four years old, and a different continent.

Jun 2001

Twenty years in fashion

Milestone, and it changed everything. Four of the largest names in American clothing, across two decades.

The 2010s

1 Jun 2013

The day job, or the novel

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: write it anyway, taken, or just do the job. Shuggie Bain won the Booker Prize in 2020, and two more novels have followed it.

Jun 2014

Writing after hours

Milestone, and it changed everything. A first novel written in evenings and weekends, by a man with a full and demanding day job.

Jun 2019

Turned down, repeatedly

Setback, and it changed everything. It was rejected many times before a publisher took it. That part is in every account of the book.

The 2020s

11 Aug 2020

Shuggie Bain

Milestone, and it changed everything. A first novel at forty four, written around a job.

19 Nov 2020

The Booker Prize

Milestone, and it changed everything. A first novel, written after hours by a working fashion director, given the biggest prize in British fiction.

5 Apr 2022

Young Mungo

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A second novel, and proof the first was not a one-off.

Apr 2026

John of John

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A third novel, six years after the Booker Prize.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is the plainest possible answer to not having time: a first novel written in evenings, turned down repeatedly, and then given the biggest prize in British fiction.
