Who is Fernanda Torres?

She was born in Rio in 1965 to Fernanda Montenegro and Fernando Torres, which in Brazil is roughly the equivalent of being born into a national institution. Her mother is generally regarded as the greatest actress the country has produced. That is an inheritance and it is also a permanent comparison, and she has worked her whole life inside it.

She was very good very early. In 1986, at twenty, she won the Best Actress award at Cannes for a film by Arnaldo Jabor. At that point the obvious route is international cinema. She did not take it. She worked in Brazil, in Portuguese, on stage and on television, including Os Normais, a comedy series from 2001 that became one of the most popular things on Brazilian television and produced two feature films. She wrote a novel, Fim, in 2014, which sold more than two hundred thousand copies at home, and a second in 2017.

Then Walter Salles cast her as Eunice Paiva in I'm Still Here, released in 2024. On 6 January 2025 she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, the first Brazilian, the first South American and the first Portuguese-speaking performer ever to take it, and an Academy Award nomination followed, making her only the second Brazilian actress nominated in that category. Her mother had been nominated in the same Golden Globe category in 1999, for a film by the same director. She was invited to join the Academy in June 2025.
