Who is Min Jin Lee?
Twelve years before the first book.
She was born in Seoul in 1968 and brought up in the United States. She read history at Yale College and took a law degree at Georgetown University Law Center, and practised as a corporate lawyer in New York from 1993 to 1995. Then she stopped, at twenty six, to write.
Her first novel was published in 2007. That is twelve years between leaving a profession and publishing a book, and it is the part of this line worth looking at. Most accounts of a writing career skip the decade in which nothing is published and the decision has to be made again every morning.
Free Food for Millionaires came in 2007, when she was thirty eight. Pachinko followed in 2017, a novel that follows four generations of a Korean family in Japan, and was a finalist for the National Book Award that year. She has said she first encountered the history it is built on as a Yale undergraduate, which puts nearly thirty years between the idea and the book. She was runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize in 2018, held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship in 2018 and 2019, and received the Manhae Grand Prize for Literature in 2022 and the Fitzgerald Prize in 2024. She has been writer-in-residence at Amherst College since 2019, and American Hagwon is due on 29 September 2026.
