Who is Tyla?
The Grammy came in February, and the injury came in March.
She was born in Edenvale, outside Johannesburg, in 2002, into a family of mixed heritage that she has described as the reason her music does not sit neatly in one tradition. She finished at Edenglen High School in 2019 and went straight at music rather than anything else, putting out a first single, Getting Late, by herself that year. It did well at home. Epic Records signed her in May 2021, and then there were two more years in which almost nobody outside South Africa knew the name.
Water was released in July 2023. What carried it was not radio but a dance: a clip of her performing the bacardi, a contemporary South African street style, went round the world, and the song became the first by a South African soloist to reach the American Billboard Hot 100 in fifty five years. In February 2024 it won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, and she became the youngest African artist to win a Grammy, at twenty two.
Then the line drops. On 7 March 2024, a fortnight before her debut album was released and a month after the Grammy, she cancelled her first world tour and her Coachella dates. She had been carrying a back injury for about a year and it had worsened. The album came out anyway on 22 March 2024. She rebuilt: an EP in July 2025, a tour that finally started in Tokyo that November, a second Grammy in February 2026, the opening of the World Cup in June, and a second album in July. Her line is worth reading because the highest point and the worst one arrive five weeks apart, and she published the record regardless.
