Who is Lady Gaga?
Dropped in months, and she made the world listen.
She was born Stefani Germanotta in Manhattan, won early admission to a music programme at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and left in her second year to write and perform full time. In September 2006 she was signed to a major label. Three months later she was dropped. The executive who let her go later called it the biggest mistake of his career.
She did not stop. She kept writing and performing in the downtown New York scene until a new deal came, and in August 2008 her debut The Fame made her a global name. The line does not run straight up from there. In 2017 she named the chronic illness behind years of pain, fibromyalgia, and postponed a tour to treat it rather than hide it, telling anyone with the same condition they were not alone.
What she preaches, in her own awards-season words rather than an advertising script, is that a career is not measured by how many times you are rejected or knocked down but by how many times you stand back up. Her line is worth reading because the deal that was meant to end it, cut short in a single season, is the one she says taught her to keep going.
