Who is Samara Joy?

She met jazz at nineteen, and won it at twenty three.

She grew up in the Castle Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx in a family of singers, but not jazz ones. Her paternal grandparents founded a Philadelphia gospel group, her grandfather was a finalist on a televised gospel competition, and her father is a vocalist and bass player who toured with a gospel musician and played her the Clark Sisters, soul and Motown. She went to a high school for the arts, sang in its jazz band, and won best vocalist at a high school competition run by Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The music she is now known for arrived late. She has said she first encountered jazz in a meaningful way when she enrolled as a voice major in the jazz programme at Purchase College, where she was named an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. Friends there played her Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, and she studied with working instrumentalists. In 2019, under her given name, she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, where one of the judges described her as a once-in-a-generation talent.

She recorded her first album while still at college and graduated with high honours in 2021. It came out that July and a magazine named her best new artist of the year. Her performance videos travelled widely, one of them viewed more than a million and a half times, and she built a large following on a platform where jazz singers are not supposed to find one. Linger Awhile followed in 2022 and went to number one on the jazz chart. She has won six Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, three for Best Jazz Vocal Album and two for Best Jazz Performance.

The Bronx is in the phrasing and gospel is under all of it, and she is still in her twenties. What it has set moving is measurable in an audience nobody expected: a great many young people who had never listened to a jazz vocal record found one through a phone screen, and stayed.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers met the music at nineteen and was holding the biggest prize in it four years later. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
