The character arc of Robert Downey Jr
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born on 4 April 1965 in New York City, acting from the age of five in his father films. Between then and now sit teen roles with the Brat Pack, a BAFTA and an Academy Award nomination for playing Charlie Chaplin at twenty seven, drug charges and less than a year in a treatment facility, a Golden Globe for Ally McBeal, dismissal from that series in 2001 after further arrests, a court-ordered rehabilitation programme, sobriety since 2003, ten Marvel films as Tony Stark, an Oscar for Oppenheimer, a Broadway debut, and a return to Marvel as a different character. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Robert Downey Jr?
Nobody would insure him. Then they cast him as Iron Man.
He made his acting debut at five, in a film directed by his father. He came up through the teen films of the mid-1980s, Weird Science and Less than Zero, and then at twenty seven did the thing that should have settled his career: he played Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, and it won him the BAFTA for Best Actor and an Academy Award nomination.
What happened next is the part everybody knows. Drug charges, and less than a year in a treatment facility. He came out and joined Ally McBeal in 2000 and won a Golden Globe for it, and then in 2001 he was dismissed from the show after further drug-related arrests. A court-ordered rehabilitation programme followed. He has been sober since 2003.
Being sober was not the same as being employable. An actor with that record is a problem for the people who insure a film, and the middle of that decade was spent proving, picture by picture, that he could be relied on.
Then in 2008 he was cast as Tony Stark. He played the part in ten Marvel films, was nominated for a second Academy Award the same year for Tropic Thunder, played Sherlock Holmes in 2009, and was the highest-paid actor in the world from 2013 to 2015. His films as a leading actor have taken over 14.3 billion dollars.
The last act is the one that pleases people most. In 2023 he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for playing a bureaucrat in Oppenheimer, which is not a superhero and not a leading man. In 2024 he was nominated for an Emmy for The Sympathizer and made his Broadway debut, and he is returning to the Marvel films as a different character entirely. He has also made a jazz-pop record that charted.
