Who is James Cameron?
He borrowed it from dentists.
He was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario in 1954, to an electrical engineer and an artist and nurse. After high school he enrolled at Fullerton College, a community college, in 1973 to study physics. He switched to English and left the college at the end of 1974. He was working as a truck driver in 1977 when he saw Star Wars, and quit the job to enter the film industry.
His directing career began in 1978. He borrowed money from a consortium of dentists and learned to direct, write and produce his first short film, Xenogenesis, with a friend. He then worked as a production assistant in 1979, as an art director in 1980, on the special effects for a John Carpenter film and as a production designer in 1981, and consulted on a design in 1982. His first feature as director, in 1982, was a sequel to a horror film about fish.
He wrote and directed The Terminator in 1984, then Aliens in 1986, The Abyss in 1989, Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991 and True Lies in 1994. He directed, wrote, co-produced and co-edited Titanic in 1997, winning Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing. Avatar followed in 2009 and Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, and three of his films are among the five highest grossing ever made. He is a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, has produced documentaries on deep-ocean exploration including Ghosts of the Abyss in 2003 and Aliens of the Deep in 2005, and in 2012 became the first person to complete a solo descent to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean.
