Who is Oumou Sangare?
She sang in the street for food money. By twenty one she was a star.
Her mother Aminata Diakite was a singer and her father Sidiki Sangare came, like her mother, from the Wassoulou region south of the Niger River. In 1970 her father took a second wife and moved to Abidjan in Ivory Coast, leaving her, her mother and her siblings in Bamako. She began singing in the streets to help her mother, and left school early to do it.
Her career, in the record own words, began in 1973, when at the age of five she won an inter-kindergarten singing competition in Bamako and performed in front of several thousand people at the Omnisport stadium. A five year old singing to a stadium is not a normal start to anything.
At sixteen she went on tour with the percussion group Djoliba, through France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Caribbean and elsewhere. The reception convinced her, and she came back to Bamako and set up her own group.
She recorded her first album, Moussoulou, which means Women, for a Malian producer, with a renowned maestro of Malian music. It sold more than two hundred thousand copies in Africa, and with the help of Ali Farka Toure she signed to an English label who re-released it. At twenty one she was already a star. Since 1990 she has performed at the Melbourne Opera, Roskilde, WOMAD, the Gnaoua festival and the Opera de la Monnaie, among others.
She writes and composes her own songs, and they argue. They often carry social criticism, particularly about the low status of women, and many of them concern love and marriage and especially freedom of choice in marriage. She is an advocate for womens rights and opposes child marriage and polygamy, which given how her own father left is a position with a history behind it. She is also in business, in hotels, agriculture and cars, and launched a car built by a Chinese manufacturer. She owns a thirty room hotel in Bamako which is a haven for musicians and her own regular performing space, and her explanation of it is the best sentence on this page: she helped build the hotel herself, and did it to show women that you can make your life better by working. In 2022 she took her first acting role, playing a grandmother in a film.
