The character arc of Anousheh Ansari
Born 12 September 1966 in Mashhad, Iran, and raised in Tehran through the years of the Iran-Iraq war. Between then and now sit an emigration to the United States as a teenager with little English, two engineering degrees, a telecom company built with her family and sold, the Ansari X Prize she funded to open private spaceflight, and an eight day flight to the space station in 2006 as the first female private space explorer. Who is Anousheh Ansari?
She funded the door, then walked through it.
She grew up in Mashhad and then Tehran, a teenager through the Iran-Iraq war, and has written that she found comfort looking up at the night sky and dreaming of the stars. At about sixteen she emigrated to the United States speaking little English, and set about learning both the language and engineering at once.
She earned a degree in electronics and computer engineering from George Mason University in 1988 and a master's from George Washington University, then co-founded a telecom company with her husband Hamid and his brother Amir in 1993. When it was sold to Sonus Networks in 2001, the family put part of the proceeds behind a struggling ten million dollar prize for private spaceflight, which took their name: the Ansari X Prize. In October 2004 SpaceShipOne won it, and a new era of commercial spaceflight began.
In September 2006 she flew to the International Space Station on a Soyuz craft, the first woman to reach space as a private explorer and the first Iranian in space. She has led the XPRIZE Foundation as its chief executive since 2018, and her line is worth reading because she paid to open a door for others before she ever went through it herself.

Setback. Her teenage years in Tehran fell during the war. She has written that the night sky was where she went to dream.
Emigrated with little English
Setback, and it changed her direction. She arrived in the United States at about sixteen speaking little English, and learned it alongside her studies.
Earned her engineering degree
Milestone. A degree in electronics and computer engineering from George Mason, earned while still new to the country.
The 1990s
Married Hamid Ansari
Milestone. She married Hamid Ansari, who became her partner in business as well as in life.
Co-founded a telecom company
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Telecom Technologies, founded with her husband and his brother Amir, built softswitch equipment for phone networks.
The 2000s
Sold the company
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Sonus Networks acquired the company in stock worth about 440 million dollars, giving the family the means for what came next.
Back the prize, or keep it safe
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: back the untested prize, taken, or keep the capital safe. On 4 October 2004 SpaceShipOne won the prize, and a new era of private spaceflight began. Two years later she flew to the space station herself.
Backed the space prize

The prize is won
