Who is Celeste Ng?
She edited everybody else first.
She was born in Pittsburgh in 1980 and studied English and American literature at Harvard from 1998, then took a master of fine arts in writing at the University of Michigan. She taught writing at Michigan and at Grub Street in Boston, and spent three years as an editor at Fiction Writers Review.
That editing job is the part worth noticing. Three years spent carefully reading other people's unfinished fiction, in a role with no glory attached, is an unusual apprenticeship and it shows in how tightly her own books are built. She won a Pushcart Prize in 2012 for a short story.
Everything I Never Told You was published in 2014 and named Amazon's book of the year, which is a very unusual thing for a debut. Little Fires Everywhere followed in 2017 and was adapted as a Hulu miniseries in 2020, and Our Missing Hearts came in 2022. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020, and her first novel is in development as a limited series. All three books circle the same subject from different angles: families that cannot say what they mean to each other.
