Who is Lalisa Manobal?
One place from four thousand, and she was the one.
She was born Pranpriya Manobal in Buriram, in the north east of Thailand, an only child raised by her Thai mother and her Swiss stepfather, who is a chef. Her name was later legally changed to Lalisa, which means the one being praised, on the advice of a fortune teller. She enrolled in dance classes at four and competed regularly from then on, joining an eleven-member dance crew that won a special team award at a televised competition in September 2009, and finishing runner-up in a national school singing contest early the same year.
In 2010, at thirteen, she auditioned in Thailand for a South Korean label. Four thousand people applied. She was the only one who qualified. She moved to Seoul in 2011 and officially became the label's first non-ethnically Korean trainee on 11 April, which meant learning a language, a dance discipline and an industry at once, a long way from home, as the only person there like her. The training took five years. She appeared as a backup dancer in a labelmate's video in 2013 and did her first modelling job in 2015.
She debuted in August 2016 as one of four members of Blackpink, which became one of the best-selling girl groups there has been. Her solo single album in September 2021 made her the first female artist to sell 736,000 copies in a week in South Korea, and its title track holds the record for the most-viewed music video in its first day by a solo artist. In 2024 she set up her own management company and signed with a new label, and her debut studio album followed in 2025, along with an acting debut in a major television series. She holds nine Guinness World Records, was the first solo Korean-pop artist to win at two international music award ceremonies, was honoured as a cultural ambassador by her country's culture ministry, and is the most followed Korean-pop artist on Instagram.
