Who is Celeste Barber?

She grew up in Terranora on the far north coast of New South Wales, with one sister, and was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder at sixteen. She left school and home at seventeen, trained in acting at a drama school attached to the University of Western Sydney, and graduated in 2002. Her first steady work was television: she played a paramedic in the hospital series All Saints from 2005 to 2009.
She has said she always thought being funny meant being stupid, and that it was a friend from that series who told her comedy was her thing and helped her focus on it. In early January 2015 she began recreating photographs of celebrities at home, in her own clothes and her own kitchen, after she and her sister had been texting each other about how women are supposed to do ordinary things. One of them, a version of a magazine photograph, went everywhere. The joke was never at the celebrity: it was at the pretence that the photographs described anybody's life. She has written three books since, the first in September 2018, and starred in a Netflix comedy in 2023 in which she performs all her own stunts.
The largest thing on her line began with a modest request. During the Australian bushfire season of 2019 and 2020 she launched an appeal for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service with a target of fifteen thousand Australian dollars. It raised over fifty million and became the biggest fundraiser ever held on the platform. Then the hard part: the fund was restricted by law to equipment and training for the fire service, and could not be redirected to affected communities as she had intended. Her lawyers and the service worked on it, and in May 2020 the Supreme Court ruled the money could not be given to other charities. She had raised more money than anybody had ever raised that way, and could not spend it where she had promised.
