Who was Lina Bo Bardi?

They bombed her studio, so she crossed an ocean.

She was born Achillina Bo in Rome and graduated from the Rome College of Architecture in 1939, then went to work in Milan. In 1943 her studio was destroyed by bombing. That is one sentence and it is the end of a career: the drawings, the models, the commissions, the address, all of it gone in a war she had no part in starting.

In October 1946 she and her husband Pietro Maria Bardi left for South America. She became a naturalised Brazilian in 1951 and spent the rest of her working life there. The Glass House, in 1951, was her own home, an early piece of reinforced concrete domestic architecture that sits in the forest on thin legs as if it had landed.

The São Paulo Museum of Art, built between 1957 and 1968, is the one people know: a great slab of gallery held up off the ground by four red columns, leaving the square underneath open to the city. SESC Pompeia, from 1977 to 1986, took a derelict factory and made it a public leisure centre without pretending the factory had not been there. Teatro Oficina came in 1984. Through all of it she was, by the record's own account, a foreigner and a woman in a profession that was neither, and her prominence grew only after 2008, long after her death. Her line is worth reading because the recognition arrives too late to be part of it.
