Who is Walter Salles?

His father was the diplomat Walter Moreira Salles, so he grew up in France and the United States and came back to Brazil at fifteen, during the military dictatorship. He spent about a decade making documentaries before he made a fiction feature, which is a long apprenticeship in a form that teaches you to watch rather than to arrange.
Central Station, in 1998, is about an ex-teacher who writes letters for people who cannot, and a boy looking for his father. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin, a Golden Globe, and two Academy Award nominations. The Motorcycle Diaries, in 2004, about the young Ernesto Guevara riding across a continent, became his biggest international success. On the Road, adapted from Kerouac, came in 2012.
Then twelve years with no feature. In an industry that forgets quickly, twelve years is usually the end of the story. He came back in 2024 with I'm Still Here, based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva's memoir of his father's disappearance during the dictatorship, with Fernanda Torres in the lead. It was nominated for Best Picture and for Best International Feature at the 97th Academy Awards, and he accepted the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2025.
