Who is Julia Hartz?
She took the job ten years in.
She graduated from Pepperdine University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in telecommunication, and began her career as a development executive at MTV, where she worked on the Jackass television series from 2001 to 2003. At FX Networks from 2003 to 2005 she helped oversee shows including The Shield, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck and 30 Days. That is four years of learning how live things get made and how audiences turn up.
She got engaged to Kevin Hartz in April 2005, started Eventbrite nine months later, and married five months after that. She co-founded the company in 2006 with him and Renaud Visage, and it sells tickets for the kind of events her television career had been about. She appeared on the cover of Forbes in 2014 in a feature on Sequoia Capital's founding stars.
In April 2016 she was appointed chief executive and joined the board, after her husband and co-founder stepped down from the role, and he went back to working as an investor. In September 2018 she took the company public, one of the few women to lead a successful initial public offering of a technology company. The Aspen Institute named her to its 2018 class of Henry Crown Fellows.
The moments
Julia Hartz's timeline.
The 2000s
Pepperdine, and then MTV
Milestone, and it changed everything. A degree and a television job in the same year.
FX Networks
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Four shows people still name, before she was twenty six.
An engagement, then a company
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Engaged, then a company, then married, in that order.
Stay in television
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: start the company, taken, or keep making television. She became Eventbrite's chief executive in April 2016 and took it public in September 2018.
Eventbrite
Milestone, and it changed everything. A ticketing company, from somebody who had made the shows.
The 2010s
The cover of Forbes
Milestone. On the cover, eight years after founding it.
Chief executive
Milestone, and it changed everything. Ten years a co-founder, and then the chair.
A Henry Crown Fellow
Milestone. A fellowship, in the year of the listing.
She took it public
Milestone, and it changed everything. One of very few women to have led one.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is the part that takes patience: she co-founded the company in 2006 and became its chief executive in 2016, and the ten years in between are the reason the listing went the way it did.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers spent ten years beside the top job before taking it. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
