Who is Justin Kan?

He wore the camera for a year.

He was in the first batch of Y Combinator funded startups in 2005, with Kiko Calendar. In 2007, with Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel and Kyle Vogt, he started Justin.tv: a live video feed of his own life, twenty four hours a day, broadcast from a webcam attached to his head. It is the kind of idea that sounds like a stunt, and for a while it was one.

Then other people wanted to broadcast too. The site opened up, added categories, and grew to more than thirty million unique visitors a month. One of those categories was gaming, and it was spun out as Twitch, which launched in public beta on 6 June 2011. Amazon.com acquired Twitch in August 2014 for 970 million dollars, and Justin.tv itself was shut down on 5 August 2014 so the company could concentrate on it.

Not everything worked, and he has been unusually public about that. Socialcam, launched in March 2011, was bought by Autodesk in July 2012 for sixty million dollars and shut down in October 2015. Exec, launched on 29 February 2012 to let anybody hand off errands by the hour, was bought by Handybook in January 2014. Atrium, a technology-led law firm he launched in 2017 and raised sixty five million dollars for in September 2018, closed in March 2020. He was a partner at Y Combinator from March 2014, left in March 2017 to start his own incubator, and founded Fractal in December 2021, renamed Stash in 2024.

The moments

Justin Kan's timeline.

The 2000s

Jun 2005

The first Y Combinator batch

Milestone, and it changed his direction. The very first batch, before anybody knew what Y Combinator was.

19 Mar 2007

A camera on his head

Milestone, and it changed everything. Twenty four hours a day, from a webcam taped to his head.

Jun 2008

Thirty million a month

Milestone, and it changed his direction. The stunt became a platform once other people were allowed on it.

The 2010s

1 Jan 2011

Which part of the site is the company

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: spin the gaming part out, taken, or keep it all as one site. Amazon.com acquired Twitch in August 2014 for 970 million dollars, and Justin.tv closed on 5 August 2014.

Mar 2011

Socialcam

Milestone. Sold for sixty million dollars, and closed three years afterwards.

6 Jun 2011

Twitch in public beta

Milestone, and it changed everything. One category of the site, spun out on its own.

29 Feb 2012

Exec, by the hour

Milestone. Launched on a leap day, which only happens if you are paying attention.

Mar 2014

A partner at Y Combinator

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Back to the place that funded him in 2005, on the other side of the desk.

5 Aug 2014

Justin.tv shut down

Setback, and it changed his direction. The original site closed, so the thing that grew out of it could live.

25 Aug 2014

Amazon buys Twitch

Milestone, and it changed everything. Nine hundred and seventy million dollars, from a webcam on somebody's head.

Jun 2017

Atrium, a law firm

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A law firm, which is not where anybody expected him to go next.

The 2020s

Mar 2020

Atrium closed

Setback, and it changed everything. Sixty five million dollars raised, and the doors shut anyway.

Dec 2021

Fractal, later Stash

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Back to games, which is where the one that worked came from.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is worth saying plainly: the silly idea became the 970 million dollar one, and the serious ones closed. Nobody could have told which was which in 2007.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

His has as many closures on it as sales, and he says so out loud. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
