He took a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and joined Apple in 2001 as a member of the product design team. His first project there was the Apple Cinema Display, which is a desktop screen. It is an unglamorous place to begin at a company famous for the things people carry.

He stayed. In 2013 he was appointed vice president of hardware engineering under Dan Riccio, overseeing the AirPods and the Mac and iPad product lines. In 2020 he was also put in charge of iPhone hardware, which Riccio had overseen directly, and in 2021 he was promoted to senior vice president of hardware engineering in Riccio's place. He was given Apple Watch hardware in late 2022.

In January 2026 he was given oversight of Apple's industrial design team as well, which Bloomberg News read as a signal about the succession. Apple announced on 20 April 2026 that he would become chief executive, and he took the job on 1 September, joining the board on the same day as Tim Cook became executive chairman.
