The character arc of Tim Cook

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born on 1 November 1960 in Mobile, Alabama. Between then and now sit Robertsdale High School in 1978, an Auburn engineering degree in 1982, a Duke MBA in 1988, Compaq in 1997, Apple in 1998, the Nike board in 2005, the chief executive job on 24 August 2011, coming out publicly in 2014, and the handover to John Ternus on 1 September 2026. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Tim Cook?

He followed Steve Jobs.

He graduated salutatorian from Robertsdale High School in Alabama in 1978, took a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering at Auburn University in 1982, and a Master of Business Administration at Duke University in 1988, where he was a Fuqua Scholar. He became vice president for corporate materials at Compaq in 1997.

Six months later he left. Apple in 1998 was a company whose revenue had fallen from eleven billion dollars in 1995 to under six billion, and taking a job there was not an obvious move for anybody with a Compaq title. Steve Jobs asked him, and he has said since that he listened to his intuition rather than to the people who knew him best. He joined as senior vice president for worldwide operations, was promoted to lead operations in January 2007, and ran the company as chief executive in 2009 while Jobs was on leave.

On 24 August 2011 he was named chief executive, and Jobs died on 5 October 2011. Following that particular founder is the hardest job in business, and he did it for fifteen years: Apple's market value went from 348 billion dollars in 2011 to over four trillion in 2026. He has sat on the Nike board since 2005, said in March 2015 that he planned to give his fortune away, and in 2014 became the first chief executive of a Fortune 500 company to come out publicly as gay. Apple announced on 20 April 2026 that he would step down on 1 September, and he became executive chairman that day.

The moments

Tim Cook's timeline.

The 1970s

Jun 1978

Salutatorian in Alabama

Milestone. Second in his year, at a public high school in Baldwin County.

The 1980s

Jun 1982

Industrial engineering at Auburn

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Industrial engineering, which is the study of how a thing actually gets made.

Jun 1988

An MBA at Duke

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A Fuqua Scholar, which is the top ten percent of the class.

The 1990s

Jun 1997

Vice president at Compaq

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A senior job at the largest personal computer maker in the world.

1 Dec 1997

Leave Compaq for Apple

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: take the Apple job, taken, or stay at Compaq. He was named chief executive of Apple on 24 August 2011 and held the job until 1 September 2026.

Mar 1998

He joined Apple

Milestone, and it changed everything. A company whose revenue had nearly halved, and he went anyway.

The 2000s

Jun 2005

The Nike board

Milestone. A second board, kept for two decades alongside the day job.

Jan 2007

Promoted to lead operations

Milestone, and it changed his direction. The plumbing of the company, which is where the margin lives.

The 2010s

24 Aug 2011

Named chief executive

Milestone, and it changed everything. Following the most watched founder in business, with six weeks before he was gone.

30 Oct 2014

He came out publicly

Milestone, and it changed everything. The first chief executive of a Fortune 500 company to say so.

Mar 2015

He will give it away

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Said out loud in 2015, which makes it harder to quietly not do.

The 2020s

Aug 2021

Ten years in the chair

Milestone. Ten years, at a job most people thought was unfollowable.

20 Apr 2026

The handover announced

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Announced in April for a September handover, which is a long runway on purpose.

1 Sep 2026

Executive chairman

Milestone, and it changed everything. Fifteen years, and then a handover on a date he chose.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is quieter than the founder who came before him: that steadiness, kept up for fifteen years, compounds into something nobody thought the job could produce.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

His is the line of somebody who followed a legend and kept going for fifteen years. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
