The character arc of Katalin Kariko

Born 17 January 1955 in Szolnok, Hungary, and raised in the small town of Kisujszallas, the daughter of a butcher. Between then and now sit a lab that ran out of money, a leaving of Hungary in 1985 with the family's savings hidden in her young daughter's teddy bear, a demotion at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 for backing messenger RNA when few thought it worth funding, years of rejected grants, the vaccines her science made possible, and the 2023 Nobel Prize. Who is Katalin Kariko?

Told the idea was going nowhere, and she carried it anyway.

She grew up in a home in Kisujszallas without running water, the daughter of a butcher, and decided early that she wanted to do research. She earned her doctorate at the University of Szeged, but in 1985 the funding for her research post ran out. So she sold the family car, hid the proceeds, around nine hundred pounds, inside her daughter's teddy bear because taking money out of the country was not allowed, and left Hungary for a job in the United States. That is where the long climb begins, though for a long time it did not look like a climb at all.

She staked her career on messenger RNA, the molecule that carries the body's instructions, believing it could be turned into medicine. Almost nobody agreed. Grant application after grant application was rejected, and in 1995 the University of Pennsylvania demoted her, cut her pay, and took her off the path to a professorship, all in the same stretch of years she was also facing a serious illness. She stayed and kept working at the lower rank. A chance meeting at a department photocopier in the late 1990s paired her with the immunologist Drew Weissman, and in 2005 the two of them published the finding that solved the problem everyone else had walked away from: a small change to the molecule stopped the body from rejecting it. The paper was turned down by the biggest journals first, and then largely ignored.

When the pandemic came, that ignored finding was the thing the mRNA vaccines were built on, and they reached billions of people. In 2023 she and Weissman were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She has said, in her memoir Breaking Through, that she never took the rejections personally and treated each closed door as a problem to solve rather than a verdict on her. Her line is worth reading because the demotion that was meant to end her career is the reason the work survived to matter.

Milestone. One of the highest honours in medicine, and a sign that the long-doubted work was now understood.
