The character arc of Indra Nooyi

Born 28 October 1955 in Madras, now Chennai, in southern India. Between then and now sit a graduate degree earned while working a reception desk from midnight to dawn, a rise through consulting into PepsiCo in 1994, the top job in 2006 as one of very few women to lead a company that size, a strategy she called Performance with Purpose, a public fight to keep the company whole, and a memoir written after she stepped down. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Tap the line to pluck it. Hover or tap any mark for its card. Drawn from the public record of her life; the sources are at the foot of the page.

Who is Indra Nooyi?

The overnight desk, and she ended up running the room.

She grew up in Madras in a close family that prized study and argument, and she came to the United States in 1978 for a graduate degree at Yale. To help pay her way she worked a reception desk from midnight to five in the morning, then went to class. In her memoir she writes plainly about that stretch, the money that was tight and the distance from home, and about walking a line between two worlds without letting go of either.

She joined PepsiCo in 1994 as head of corporate strategy, became its chief financial officer, and in 2006 became its chief executive, one of very few women to lead a company of that scale and the first immigrant to run it. She named her strategy Performance with Purpose, tying growth to nutrition, water and the people who did the work. When an activist investor pressed her to break the company in two, she refused and held it together with the numbers to back her.

The telling she returns to is her own: work and family were never a clean trade, and she carried both at once, imperfectly and out loud. She stepped down in 2018 after twelve years at the top, wrote it all down in My Life in Full, and kept working, taking seats on boards from Seattle to Amsterdam. Her line is worth reading because the desk she answered at midnight is where she says the whole climb began.

Every story draws a unique line.

Hers runs seven decades and is still adding chapters. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about three minutes.
