Who is Gabby Thomas?

She was born in Atlanta to an American mother and a father from Jamaica, and has a twin brother. In 2007 her mother, having finished a doctorate, moved the family to Massachusetts to teach at a university there. She played softball and soccer before joining the track team at her school, and has said her first memory of a track race was watching Allyson Felix at her grandmother's house. In four years she set multiple school records and was most valuable player every year.
She went to Harvard, studied neurobiology and global health, and won twenty two conference titles across three years in six different events, setting school and Ivy League records at a hundred metres, two hundred metres and the indoor sixty. Then she moved to Austin to be coached properly and turned professional in 2018. She later finished a master of public health in epidemiology, which she completed in May 2023, in the middle of her competitive career.
In 2020 she was provisionally banned after allegedly missing three anti-doping tests within a twelve month period. The suspension was lifted in July that year. In 2021 a scan revealed a tumour on her liver, which turned out to be benign.
What she did next is the part to sit with. At the Olympic trials on 26 June 2021 she ran 21.61 seconds, the second fastest two hundred metres any woman had ever run at that point, behind only the world record holder. She said afterwards that it had changed how she viewed herself as a runner, that she was still in shock, and that her dream had been to make the Olympic team and now she would set higher goals. She took bronze in the Olympic final and a relay silver.
Then a torn hamstring weeks before the national championships in 2022 left her eighth in the final and out of a home World Championships. She came back to become national champion in July 2023, took world silver and a relay gold in a championship record in Budapest, and at the Paris Olympics in 2024 won three gold medals: the two hundred metres, the four by hundred relay and the four by four hundred relay, the last in an American record and the second fastest time ever run.
