Who is Thuan Pham?

He was born in Saigon in the mid 1960s. In 1979, at about twelve, he left Vietnam with his family as one of the boat people. They reached Malaysia and were refused entry. They were robbed twice by pirates in the Gulf of Thailand. They went on to Indonesia and spent ten months in a refugee camp there, and were eventually granted asylum and settled in Rockville, Maryland.
He went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, taking a bachelor's in computer science in 1990 and a master's in 1991. Then a career built in order rather than in a leap: three years at Hewlett-Packard, then Silicon Graphics, then NetGravity as its fourth engineer, then DoubleClick when it bought NetGravity in 1999, then eight years at VMware.
In 2013 he became chief technology officer of Uber and held the job until 2020, through the period when the company grew into one of the largest real time systems anybody had operated. He was chief technology officer of Coupang from 2020 to 2022, and took the same role at Faire in 2024. His line is worth reading for its shape: no single lucky break on it anywhere, just a very long climb that started at a border where somebody said no.
