Who is Elena Reygadas?
A thesis on Virginia Woolf, and a Michelin star.
She is the sister of a film director, and the degree she took was not in food at all: she read English literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and graduated with a thesis on Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves. That is an unusual qualification for somebody who now runs one of the best restaurants in Latin America, and it is worth noticing that a person who has spent years reading closely will read a plate the same way.
She opened Rosetta in the Roma district of Mexico City in 2010. It became known first for the homemade bread and pasta rather than for anything more elaborate, and only later added Mexican seasonal ingredients to the dishes. Two years afterwards she established a bakery on the same street, known for a guava roll and for traditional Mexican breads. Two more places followed, a restaurant in a neighbouring district in 2015 and a coffeehouse in 2017.
The recognition came in stages. An award for Latin America's best female chef in September 2014. A first book in 2019, with recipes and her own essays on food ethics and care for the environment. A seat on an international culinary council in 2022, and in the same year a scholarship in her own name to promote equal opportunity and strengthen the position of Mexican women in the kitchen. In 2023 she was named the world's best female chef, Rosetta entered the international restaurant list at forty nine, and the French government gave her an agricultural order for her contribution to farming. In 2024 Rosetta was awarded a Michelin star.
