Who is Refik Anadol?
A Commodore 64 at eight, and a museum of his own.
He grew up in Istanbul in a family of teachers, and taught himself to program on a Commodore 64 at the age of eight. That is the whole seed of it: a child working out how to make a machine do something, in a house where learning was the family trade.
He took a BA in photography and video at Istanbul Bilgi University in 2009 and an MFA in visual communication there in 2011, then went to UCLA for a second MFA, in design media arts, finishing in 2014. That year he founded Refik Anadol Studio with Efsun Erkılıç. His work uses very large quantities of data as the raw material, the way a painter uses pigment, and lets a machine find the shapes inside it.
WDCH Dreams, in 2018, projected a hundred years of an orchestra's archive onto the outside of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Machine Hallucinations series followed. Unsupervised, made in 2022, was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in October 2023 and became the first generative artwork in its permanent collection, which is a line in the history of the medium rather than of one artist. Living Archive: Nature showed at the Serpentine in London in 2024. A work made with Lionel Messi sold at Christie's in 2025 for one point eight seven million dollars, with proceeds going to education in Latin America. On 20 June 2026 Dataland, a twenty thousand square foot museum of AI art he co-founded, opened at The Grand in Los Angeles. His line is worth reading because the eight year old with the Commodore never stopped being the person doing the work.
